The Clinical Program
CA-1 Year
The goal of the first year of clinical training is to give residents the broadest possible exposure to the range of the practice of anesthesia. This is achieved through a series of month-long clinical rotations at Georgetown University Hospital. At the start of the CA-1 year, a week-long session of lectures and workshops will serve to orient each resident to the fundamentals of anesthetic practice. During the first month, residents are paired with a faculty mentor with whom they will administer anesthesia each day. Throughout the year, supervision of a resident’s performance will be guided by the levels of proficiency and comfort each resident exhibits, in a manner that allows for independence in judgment and action while ensuring safe patient care. At the completion of the CA-1 year, each resident can expect to have experience in a broad sampling of anesthetic care and techniques.

CA-2 Year
The second year of clinical anesthesia reflects subspecialty interests. Residents build upon their basic anesthesia knowledge by comprehensive involvement in the major areas of specialization. This both enriches the continuum of clinical experience and crystallizes resident interest for future advanced training and specialization. Rotations last one to two months, depending on the nature of the subspecialty and ABA requirements. CA-2 residents are expected to assume greater patient care responsibilities and to participate in teaching medical students. Washington Hospital Center, our sister MedStar institution, serves as the primary clinical site for CA-2 rotations in cardiac anesthesia, trauma, and obstetric anesthesia.

CA-3 Year
Residents pursue a year of advanced training in those clinical or research areas of greatest interest. The year is designed around the needs of each resident, not the service needs of the hospital. Electives are available both at Georgetown University Hospital and the Washington Hospital Center. We are pleased to offer advanced pediatric experience through a rotation at Children’s National Medical Center. Residents wishing to pursue careers in academic medicine or those interested in clinical or laboratory research are encouraged. Up to 6 months can be devoted to research through our collaboration with a laboratory at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.
