Internships
Entry into clinical anesthesia training is contingent upon successful completion of an internship year. An internal medicine, surgery, or transitional year internship (or a PGY-1 year in any of several specialties) is acceptable, as long as the curriculum is consistent with the Clinical Base Year (CBY) requirements of the American Board of Anesthesiology.
At the current time, all resident positions are in the Department of Anesthesia are categorical – clinical anesthesia training only. We do not sponsor a preliminary year internship. For applicants seeking a position in the Washington, D.C. area, the Departments of Medicine at Georgetown University Hospital and the Washington Hospital Center offer positions in preliminary internal medicine, and Inova Fairfax Hospital in Northern Virginia offers a transitional year.
