Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology          

Washington Hospital Center and Georgetown University Hospital offer a combined twelve month fellowship (PGY 5) in Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology.  This program provides specific in-depth clinical training for the perioperative management of patients with diseases of the chest requiring surgery.  This includes but is not limited to coronary artery disease, cardiac valvular disease, heart failure, diseases of the aorta, and lung cancer.

The fellowship is based primarily at Washington Hospital Center, which has a very active cardiac surgery service.  We provide anesthesia for about 2000 hearts per year.  Greater than 50% of CABGs are off-pump.  The case mix is about two-thirds CABG, with the remaining cases including mitral valve repair and replacement, aortic valve replacement, type A aortic dissection repair (which may require deep hypothermic circulatory arrest), ventricular assist devices, and heart transplants.  We also have a busy endovascular aortic stenting service and do about 100 pericardial windows for effusion per year.  Fellows will spend three months at Georgetown University Hospital providing anesthesia for complex thoracic, vascular, and transplant surgery.  At both sites, fellows are expected to teach and supervise junior residents from Georgetown University.

The fellowship also emphasizes extensive training in perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography.  Fellows will be eligible to take the written board examination and acquire the necessary cases to earn certification from the National Board of Echocardiography.  In addition, we encourage the pursuit of clinical research.
