Inpatient Services
Inpatient service for epidural patient-controlled analgesia is managed and supervised by the Anesthesia Pain Service 24-hours-a-day. A pump and computerized programming unit with a continuous infusion and/or dosage range of medication is self-administered via a small catheter inserted into the epidural space.

Assessment and Evaluation
The Anesthesia Pain Service provides an assessment / medical evaluation and pain treatment plan. The Acute Pain Service/anesthesiologist completes standardized orders for the patient and manages all pain medication/sedation orders while the patient is on epidural PCA. Programming of the pump is done by the Anesthesia Pain Service or Anesthesia and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit nursing staff.

Pain Service 24-Hours-a-Day
Physicians from the Anesthesia Pain Service provide in-house pain management consultations during the day and are available by pager 24 hours per day. Patients with complex pain management needs are medically assessed and evaluated by the Anesthesia Pain Service with recommendations for pain management made to the referring physicians. Inpatient consultation for acute and chronic pain disorders. Services include Epidural Patient-Controlled Analgesia for postoperative pain, medication management, therapeutic/diagnostic blocks and implanted devices.
